Septuaginta: The Numerical Axis Mundi
Throughout history, certain universal symbols have been hidden in plain sight, symbols that transcend language, culture, and religious affiliation, revealing perennial truths to those prepared to see them. Their meanings were often concealed from the masses, reserved instead for a select few who underwent a gradual, initiatic process of revelation.
As René Guénon observed, "there are symbols which are so common to the most diverse and widely separated traditional forms, not as a result of ‘borrowings,’ which in many cases would be quite impossible, but because they pertain to the Primordial Tradition from which these forms have issued either directly or indirectly." The correlative numbers 70 and 72 exemplify such symbols. Their recurring appearance across spiritual traditions and esoteric schools attests to a shared symbolic foundation.
This presentation will examine the early usage, fraternal preservation, and esoteric interpretation of the Septuaginta. We will consider its significance in key narratives such as the Tower of Babel, the construction and symbolism of the Temple veil, the design of the menorah, and early Christian codices. Ultimately, we will synthesize these examples to argue that the Septuaginta functions as a numerical axis mundi, a symbolic vehicle connecting the heavens and the earth through sacred tradition.
